Reflexology

Reflexology is a complementary therapy which facilitates the healing ability of the whole person both physically and emotionally, rather than just the symptoms of illness. By stimulating specific points on the feet or hands, which correspond to organs and structures, the body is encouraged to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.

Reflexology encourages this balance in the body by releasing congestion and tension and where necessary, stimulating or calming areas of the body. It also encourages blood and lymph flow which enables the body to eliminate toxins and waste.

Theory behind reflexology

Reflexology is based on the principles of the ancient Chinese theory that there is energy flowing around our bodies. The energy pathways can become congested whether the cause is emotional or physical. If this congestion and imbalance is left untreated, illness can occur. Reflexology can clear the imbalances within our bodies before we are even aware of a problem. Reflexologists are able to access these energy channels by manipulating the reflex points on the feet and hands.

Nerve supply is also stimulated by working on the many nerve endings in the feet and hands.

Reflexology has been shown to be effective for many conditions including:

  • Stress and emotional troubles
  • Asthma and other respiratory problems
  • Sinusitis
  • Digestive disorders
  • Pregnancy and postnatal care
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Infertility and hormonal imbalances
  • Invaluable in palliative care

Reflexology does not diagnose or prescribe. It is not invasive, no drugs or needles are used and it is suitable for almost everyone, old and young alike. The pressure applied to the feet or hands is appropriate to each individual client.

In general, reflexology is deeply relaxing. As about seventy five percent of disease is stress related, reflexology can make a major contribution towards maintaining general good health as well as alleviating specific conditions or problems. As with many holistic therapies, reflexology can often work well in partnership with conventional medicine.
